Frequently Asked Questions
What is your area of service? Do you have a studio?
Typically sessions take place either outdoors or in my clients’ homes within Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
For outdoor sessions, I’m happy to provide location suggestions within the constrains of this map.
Travel is included for locations covered within this map. For locations outside of that map, travel will be billed at $60/hour.
What are the locations?
At Home/Neighborhood- My personal favorite… in keeping this session true to your family, this option is great for keeping things comfortable and easy. This allows for a relaxed session doing some of your favorite everyday activities. Think neighborhood walks and tickle fights on the bed.
On Location- I have my own little arsenal of my favorite places to shoot…but I am open to new ideas! I Love different textures, colors walls, nature, and pretty much anywhere with good light!
Do we get the downloads all images?
Number of high resolution images depends on the plan you purchased. You will be able to download all images, watermarked and in low resolution.
Do you provide prints?
I have some amazing print labs that I work with that you can order with directly through me. They have been quality tested by yours truly and I know they will make great additions to your home! You will be able to purchase prints and other products directly from your online gallery.
How would you describe your style?
I love authentic images that are filled with emotion. I love bright colors and warm sunshine.
I seek out genuine moments that make me FEEL something.
Most photos are lightly posed, meaning I’ll help get you into place first and then encourage interaction and real expressions while we’re snapping away.
If you want to sum it up in a couple of words, my work is most often categorized as lifestyle photography.
Do you use flash
Occasionally. I mostly use natural light. This not only allows me to work quickly and flexibly but also creates more authentic results.
How long will it take to receive our images?
Your proof gallery is posted within a week after your session,
and your finished image files are delivered up to a week after your selection.
HELP!!! I'm not photogenic at all!
Believe it or not, pretty much EVERYONE tells me this before their session, and it never turns out to be true! I love coaching my clients through having their photos taken, and I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to make you look fabulous! When you’re having a great time, you’ll look more beautiful than you thought was possible. I promise!
What should we wear?
1. Coordinating colors not matching.
Long gone are the days of everyone wearing a white shirt and matching.
Instead, pick a couple of colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme.
2. Look at your home decor.
Do you like bright colors? Neutrals? Since you will be hanging these photos in your house
you want to make sure the colors of your clothes go with the color scheme of your home.
3. Don't forget accessories.
Accessories not only add to your outfit but they can be fun to use in photos.
Have the man wear a tie for the woman to hold. Necklaces for the kids to play with or hats to hide behind.
4. Limit patterns.
Not everyone in the photo should wear patterns as it may distract the final image.
5. Look for clothing collections.
When shopping for clothes for kids, head to stores that typically have color coordinating collections.
You can then purchase clothes for all the children from one store. I know their clothes will coordinate.
6. Plan ahead.
Once you book your session, start thinking of the clothes right away. You may think certain clothes will fit your kids or that one dress is clean. If you wait until the day of or day before you may run into an issue of clothes not fitting, being dirty or need to be dry cleaned.
7. Say no to characters.
Yes, your little one may love their Toy Story shirt but you may want to skip it for the family photo session.
Just like patterns, characters on shirts can be pretty distracting.
8. Avoid all white or all black clothing.
If you are wearing an all white shirt then it is very easy to blow out parts of your shirt causing it to lose its detail. Same can be said with all black, it’s easy to have clipping on black clothing and the detail is lost.
9. Textures are your friend.
I am a huge fan of a cotton fitted shirt. However, in photographs I like to add textures like scarves or belts to add a little more to the image. Don’t shy away from different textures.
10. Consider your background.
If you are taking photos in front of a backdrop, consider what you are wearing. I remember and image my sister, her husband and newborn son took where they were all wearing black in front of a black backdrop. She and her husband look like floating heads holding a baby.
11. Think classic.
These photos will be hanging on your walls and treasured for years to come. By choosing simple, classic clothes you will help give your images a timeless feel.
What happens if weather doesn't cooperate?
I keep a number of backup dates open each month in case of bad weather, and there is no fee to reschedule to a new date if it’s raining or overcast. Since weather is pretty much always unpredictable and changes very quickly, so I typically wait to call off a session until that morning (or the night before sunrise sessions).
What if my kids don't cooperate?
I love getting to know my clients’ kids, even the ones who are shy/stubborn/you name it!
I always approach the session as a new friend who’s just there to play and have a good time.
I have all the patience in the world, and I find that being easy-going translates to happy kiddos.
That being said, not every moment of the session is perfect, and that’s totally OK — in fact, it’s encouraged!
In 10 years, I’m willing to bet that you’ll cherish the image of your toddler crying fake tears just as much as the one that we took 10 seconds later of him happily running toward the camera. My goal is to capture the personalities of the kids in front of my lens,
including all of the beautiful quirks, details, and small moments that make up childhood.
I saw cute pictures on Instagram / Facebook / Pinterest. Can we do those?
Internet is best used as an initial source of inspiration, rather than a strict guideline for your photographer.
After all you hired me and not someone else.
If we’re focused on recreating someone else’s photos, that will leave us less time to create shots that showcase the unique aspects of your family.
If you do want to use internet to help you plan your session, look at it as general inspiration — for instance, use it to figure out what style of photos you like, and then search for a photographer whose images match that style.
What can I do to help session go smoothly?
The BEST thing you can do is to let go and enjoy! I know it’s hard not to be stressed before your session, but babies pick up on anxiety really easily. We’ll have the best chance at getting gorgeous images if we let them happen naturally (with a little guidance from me, of course!) I want your pictures to be amazing and will do all the hard work for you! Your only job is to relax and have fun.
Can we do a home session even if our house is tiny/dark/messy?
YES!!! I’ve worked in hundreds of clients’ homes, and I’ve never found one that didn’t work.
There is always a beautiful little patch of light that’s perfect for photography!
I’m used to photographing in a variety of homes, from L.E.S. basement apartments to 4000-square-foot condos.
If it’s home to your family, that’s all I need to work with! And PLEASE don’t worry about the mess - nothing fazes me!
If needed, I’ll help you move furniture/clutter around as we go.
Pricing & Booking
How do I reserve you for a photo shooting?
As soon as we have decided on a date and time for your event you can book me right here.
How high is the deposit? When is the remainder due?
For weddings the deposit to confirm your booking is 30 percent of the full package price (for bookings over 12 month in advance 50 percent). The remainder is due four weeks before the wedding takes place.
For portrait / family / maternity / engagement session 50 percent deposit is due at the time of your booking.
The remainder is due one on the day of session.
Which form of payments do accept?
Cash is preferred. However, for easy payment of your deposit and package we offer a comfortable online payment option.
All major credit and debit cards are accepted. If you prefer PayPal is available.
What is the difference between a Pay-per-print and an all-inclusive Digital Combo?
If you decide to go with our Pay-per-print packages, than you pay directly for the time needed to take the photos in the form of a session fee. Once the images are ready for you can decide then on an individual base which images you like the best and only buy the digital files or prints you are interested in. This approach is best for people who are not yet sure how many images you are going to want and order pictures over time.
With the All-inclusive-digital combo you get full access to all the high resolution digital files right away and you print them with your preferred provider as you go. There is no additional cost after the session is finished. This option is best for clients who just love our photos and know they want to enjoy the full collection of their images later on. If you plan to order a lot of photos it also tends to be more economic.
If we cancel our booking will we receive our deposit back?
In case you cancel you will not receive your deposit back.
This covers any loss in the form of lost bookings and eventual cost already arisen before the actual session.
However, we understand that unforeseen events can happen, so we try to work on alternatives if possible
– e.g. find a new date for a session.
Which additional cost might occur?
Most of our packages come with the option to receive digital files, so in this case there is no additional cost after the payment of the package. If you choose pay per print packages the final cost will depend on your selection.
For all outside fees, for example coordinator and venue commissions, tickets,
permits or any other third party cost have to be covered by the client.
How do you describe your shooting style?
I love candid moments and real emotions between the wonderful people we get to photography.
In our session we focus on the interactions of you and try to give you as much space as possible, but of course also guide you if necessary. Standing in front of the camera is not an everyday occurrence, so I want you to be as comfortable as possible.
Do you provide digital negatives (RAW files) after the shoot?
NO. You will be provided with edited images only. Each picture is carefully handled and will be a representation of our work.
Be sure to look at our portfolio and that our work and style are a good match for you.
What is the difference between edited photos and edited and retouched?
All final images are edited for color, saturation, exposure and sharpness ensuring that each image is on its own the best it can be.
For retouched (selected) images we take things a step further by clearing up blemishes, smoothing the skin, removing as much interference from the back ground as possible. Retouched images are transformed from great images into pieces of art!
Let’s talk photoshop!
I love every single one of my clients exactly as they are, so if you are hoping to have a beautifully photoshopped/altered image,
I am not your man. I want these photos to reflect you, being yourself with your family!
Yes, I can edit out small zits or scars if need be, but I tend to keep it as natural as possible.
That being said, if you would like us to do further retouching or editing to any of your images (within reason),
let me know and I can send you our editing pricing (this is mainly used for professional headshots).
I know a lot of people have their heart set on one photo of everyone looking at the camera smiling.
I will do my best, but I cannot guarantee a perfect take.
I have some tricks up my sleeve, so when it comes to photographing your kids I ask that you let me do my thing to get your kids comfortable and having fun.
Do I get all the images you take?
We go thoroughly through all the images we take during a session and will take out the obviously unusable ones in a first step.
We also reduce the amount of duplicates so you can enjoy only the best of the best images.
With each packages we guarantee a minimum amount of images (50 photos/hour),
but in the end you will get all the images which make it into the final collection.
What rights do I have to the digital prints?
If your selected packages includes digital files you will receive reproduction rights to all your images. This gives you the right to reproduce the images for personal use ONLY, so you can use them for prints, sharing them on your social media, making canvases, etc.
Commercial use is not allowed if not separately agreed on.
The copyright of the images belongs to the photographer.
Which locations do you recommend for a Portrait Session?
We do outdoor photography sessions, indoor shoots, we love to explore cities, go on hikes with you and can shoot (almost) everywhere you might come up with. The best places are where you feel most comfortable so you enjoy the session as much as possible.
We love to talk about your ideas so just shoot us a message and we can get into the details.
How should we prepare for Portrait Session?
Good mood is the most important thing! Make sure you have enough time to prepare beforehand so you are not stressed.
With kids it helps to bring something to drink and some little treats to make it easy for them as well.
We can go through specific questions before your shoot so we can ensure you are well prepared.
What happens if we are running late or vice versa to our shoot? Will you extend the shooting time?
It is our practice to arrive early to our shoots, as I like to scope out the surroundings and get our creative mind going.
If for some reason we are late we will do our best to extend the time or if the time is substantial and the shoot is unsuccessful we will refund all or part of the money.
If a client is late we will do our best in the time that is remaining to get everything we need, but we don’t extend the session time.
Our portrait sessions are quite long in the time frame available.
We do this so people can be relaxed and happy during the session and don’t need to be stressed about the time.
What if it is raining during an outdoor session
or due to the weather there is no sunset?
In the case of rain or bad weather we will have to improvise! Sometimes that means finding shelter or finding other creative way to capture the moment. If the weather is potentially damaging to our equipment we will be restricted to areas that we can safely shoot.
Bad weather is not a reasons itself to cancel a session, but if possible we’ll try our best to find alternative arrangement – e.g. change locations, wait the weather out.
Please note, that there are no refunds due to weather.
Are you available to stay longer if we want to hire you for more time on the spot?
What are your rates and how do we go about this? Depending on our availability we can stay additional time.
The rate is depending on the kind of event we are covering and the number of photographers on site.
Do you offer online proofs? How do I select the images I want?
We don’t offer online proofs in the classical sense. All the images in the final gallery will be edited and available to you.
Going through a high number of images can be actually quite challenging and we consider it a part of our job to make sure you get the best of the best photos in the final collection.
Do you offer online viewing?
Yes, all our packages come with an easy to access online gallery so you can view and share your images with friends and family.
Depending on th package the gallery will be available for a minimum of 3 months after publication.
Can you just email me a few images?
A lot of work goes into the images after the actual session is done, and it sounds easier to “just send a few images” than it actually is.
If possible we try to provide a sneak peek on social media, but otherwise concentrate very hard to provide you with your images in the promised time frame.
Do you backup your images? How can we be sure our images won’t get lost?
In our editing process we ensure that we have multiple copies of your images at all time.
We’ll also store your images for one year, but please make sure you store them in a save place as well so you don’t loose them.
Printing the final images is of course the best way to preserve them, but we also recommend multiple copies in save places.
